Traits of a Church Planter
If you are asking, "Does Kevin have what it takes to plant a church?" --
the following are specific examples of how I believe I have demonstrated
characteristics of someone gifted by God to do the work required of a church planter. Church Planters do not
need to hit a home run in every category, but these are some of the overall
traits of a planter:
- Clear visionizing capacity... Is able to hear the will of God and
communicate God's vision for the church to the people in such a way
that the people of the church take personal ownership in the vision.
- Clear calling by God.... Knows that God has called them to this community
to accomplish the Great Commission through people not to people.
- Empowering Leadership.... Is able to empower God's people to be an
effective church that multiplies disciples. And creates ownership in
ministry by the church.
- Community Involvement..... Is well connected in the non churched
community outside the church walls. Knows what are the hot buttons of
the community and is able to take the gospel into the culture.
- Peer Relationships with the Unchurched..... follows closely with
community involvement. Has friends that are at a peer level outside
the church. Typically business people, sales persons, teachers, athletics,
etc..
- Entrepreneur Ability... Able to start things from scratch. Either
inside the church or in the business world.
- Passionate Spirituality.... Thinks Jesus is cool and knows that everyone
else will too.
- Can Do Attitude.... Sees the glass as half full and on the way to
the top.
- Resilience.... Sees obstacles as opportunities. Gets up and keeps
going. When you hit the wall -- you find a ladder.
- Commitment to the Great Commission.... Has proven track record of
making disciples that multiply other disciples. Also, honestly believes
that people are going to spend eternity in hell if the church does not
reach them.
The following phrases really get my attention:
- "The Great Commission matters to me"
- "I am a leader"
- "I like starting things"
- "I enjoy meeting people"
- "We have never done it that way before is a battle cry to
action"
- "For those who would like to start over"
- "Fulfill your dreams for ministry in birthing a new church"
- "Lead the church to what you've always dreamed for it to be"
- "I want to lead and pastor from the get-go"
- "I want to start a church from scratch. We can help you"
- "I am tired of struggling with tradition in the church"
- "I want a new horizon in ministry"
- "The purpose driven church makes sense to me"
- "Jesus died on the cross for lost people"
